Is a 24-85mm lens alright?

I recently bought a Canon EOS 450D/XSi... which should have included the kit lens with a focal length of 18-55mm but then I thought that it might be quite limiting so instead, I opted for the 24-85mm lens. Just one thing though, I found out after I bought the camera with lens that the 24-85mm lens is being used for film cameras. I am thinking that it would still be alright with my 450D. Was that a good choice?
